| Gudhi Padwa is celebrated on the first day of the Chaitra month, and is celebrated as New Year's Day by Maharashtrians and Hindu Konkanis. This marks the first day of Marathi Calendar. This is one of the 3 and a half days in the Indian Lunar calendar called "Sade-Teen Muhurt", whose every moment is considered auspicious in general to start a new activity. This festival marks the new harvest. The fresh smell of mangoes and jackfruits is in the air. People start the day with neem leaves mixed with jaggery. Gudhi made by bright zari cloth tied to the top of a long bamboo with neem & mango leaves and flower garland and is hoisted out of the window. People enjoy both these festivals with delicacies like puran poli with ghee or warm milk. Other delicacies prepared during this time are shrikand, ladoo and basundi. |
